LEFTIES: Walk-off error dooms Port Angeles in road tilt

Fall 3-2 to Wenatchee

WENATCHEE — Wenatchee earned a 3-2 walk-off win after outlasting Port Angeles in a West Coast League baseball contest Wednesday at Paul Thomas Field.

It was a pitchers’ duel for the first five innings before both teams broke out the bats.

Trent Jackson singled with two outs and Chase Taylor followed with an RBI double to get the Lefties going in the top of the sixth.

B.Y. Choi then came through with an RBI single to score Taylor.

Wenatchee tied the game up on M.J. Sweeney’s RBI single and Carson Ohland’s sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning.

The Apple Sox won it in the bottom of the ninth when Reeve Boyd led off with a single and moved to second and third on an intentional walk and a walk.

Boyd then came home when Josh Williams hit a ball that was flubbed by Lefties second baseman Roberto Nunez.

Evan Canfield tossed three shutout innings in relief to earn the win for Wenatchee (15-5).

Shea Blanchard tossed five shutout innings for Port Angeles before giving way to his Hawaii Pacific teammate Makana Quia.

Quia was chased after recording one out and allowing two runs on two walks.

Wes Peninger was the hard-luck loser for Port Angeles after going three full innings in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The Lefties and Apple Sox wrapped their three-game series late Thursday.

Port Angeles (8-14) heads to Nanaimo today for a three-day set over the Canada Day weekend.

Standen goes five strong

The Lefties won Tuesday’s contest 3-1.

Trent Jackson launched his first home run of the summer, a solo shot to get things going in the first inning for Port Angeles.

Starting pitcher Drew Standen encountered his lone rough patch of the night, allowing a two-out double to Frankie Carney followed by a Reeve Boyd RBI single in the bottom of the second.

Catcher Chase Taylor then showed off his arm, catching Boyd as he attempted to steal second to end the inning.

B.Y. Choi put the Lefties up for good in the top of the third with a two-run home run that scored Jackson. It was Choi’s first of the summer.

Standen went five innings, allowing the one run on three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts.

Standen is tops in the West Coast League in DIGS or Defense Independent Game Score, a statistical metric which focuses solely on pitcher stats for multi-inning pitchers.

Relievers Kole Acker, Brock Mayer and CJ Lewis combined to hold Wenatchee scoreless for the final six frames, with Lewis earning the save.
