LEFTIES: Seventh inning no heaven for Port Angeles

Wenatchee’s 12-run inning sends Lefties packing

WENATCHEE — It was all going swimmingly for the Port Angeles Lefties: up 6-3 through the first six innings of the first game of a three-game road set with the Wenatchee Apple Sox.

Then the bottom fell out entirely.

Wenatchee scored 12 seventh-inning runs, batting around the order twice, as the Apple Sox feasted on nine walks allowed in the inning by Lefties pitcher Tino Bethancourt. Adam Grob produced a pair of two-run singles for the Apple Sox, and Jackson Van De Brake capped the scoring outburst with a two-out grand-slam home run.

With the outcome pretty much determined, Lefties’ infielder Nick Oakley pitched the eighth inning, allowing one run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout.

Port Angeles’ Bryce Matthews notched his first triple of the summer in the loss, while Nathan Chong doubled and drove home two runs. Ethan Flodstrom, Luke Saunders and Javi Espinoza all drove in runs for the Lefties (12-28).

Port Angeles and Wenatchee meet again tonight at 6:35 p.m.
