BELLINGHAM — The Port Angeles Lefties had a remarkable comeback victory Sunday, digging out of a 7-0 hole to beat the Bellingham Bells 10-7.
Garrett Lake of Purdue-Fort Wayne was the big hero, hitting three home runs on the day. Lake hit the tying home run in the ninth inning to make it 7-7. He followed up with a go-ahead two-run home run in the 10th inning. The Lefties tacked on another run in the 10th for the final margin.
Lake ended up 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Javy Espinosa of Saint Mary’s went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Coleman Schmidt of Saint Mary’s went 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored. Corey Sanchez of San Jose State had a hit and two RBIs.
Kaden Lewis pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up a win and Zach Thomas of Dixie State pitched a scoreless 10th to collect a save.
On Saturday, the Lefties got outstanding pitching and a home run from Jack Holman to win their first league game 6-1 over Bellingham.
The Lefties erupted for five runs in the first inning, thanks to a single, two walks, two errors and Holman’s home run. Holman, from UCLA, finished the game with two RBIs.
On the mound, the Lefties dominated, giving up just two hits the entire game and one walk while striking out 12.
Justin Miller of Purdue-Fort Wayne started the game, going six innings and allowing one hit and no walks. He struck out seven. Thomas pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits, no walks and striking out three. Lewis gave up a run in one inning, but struck out two.
Nathan Chong of Saint Mary’s went 2-for-3, scored two runs, walked once and stole a base.
The Lefties (2-1) return to Civic Field on Monday to play Corvallis at 6:35 p.m.
