LEFTIES: Port Angeles falls on walk-off single

WENATCHEE — A pinch-hit triple by Wenatchee’s Collin Villegas tied the score in the bottom of the ninth, and two batters later, Tino Bethancourt’s RBI single produced a 5-4 walk-off loss for the Port Angeles Lefties on Wednesday night.

Port Angeles starter Evan Canfield and Wenatchee’s Cole Hatton dueled through the first five innings, with each team mustering just two hits.

The Lefties went up 1-0 when Nathan Chong scored on a wild pitch in the third.

Canfield found trouble in the sixth when Garrett Cutting led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single from Michael O’Hara. Two batters later, Grob drove in O’Hara with an RBI double.

Canfield was pulled after scattering four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Port Angeles regained the lead with a three-run seventh, as Jack Holman doubled to open the inning followed by an RBI single by Garrett Lake and another single by Chong to chase Hatton from the contest.

The Lefties added a run when Lake scored on a fielder’s choice by Luke Saunders, and Chong came home as the result of an error on new Wenatchee pitcher Alex Brady to go up 4-2.

A solo home run by Apple Sox Johnny Newman Jr. in the bottom half of the seventh cut the Lefties’ lead to 4-3 and set up Wenatchee’s final inning fireworks.

Port Angeles (12-29) wrapped the series with Wenatchee late Thursday and return home tonight for the final homestand of the summer. The Lefties will host Yakima Valley tonight, Saturday at 6:35 p.m. and Sunday at 1:35 p.m. A three-game set with Portland follows beginning Tuesday.
