LEFTIES: Cowlitz mauls Port Angeles in opener

Oakley homers in loss

PORT ANGELES — Both the Cowlitz Black Bears and the Port Angeles Lefties scored the same amount of runs as they had hits in Friday night’s West Coast League contest at Civic Field.

That turned out better for the visitors in a 17-4 rout of the Lefties in the first game of a three-game weekend series.

Cowlitz broke out to a big lead early, putting four across in the second and five more in the third — taking advantage of wild pitches and walks by Lefties starter Luke Jewett and relievers Joe Sinclair and Ricardo Amavizca.

Nick Oakley got a chunk back for Port Angeles in the third with a three-run home run to score Ethan Flodstrom who had reached on a base hit and Garrett Lake who had walked.

Oakley added a late run when he scored on a Cowlitz error.

Port Angeles (9-21) hosts Cowlitz (15-16) today at 1:35 p.m.

Lake scored on a fielders’ choice by Javi Espinoza and Oakley came home with the eventual game-winning run on Coleman Schmidt’s RBI double, Schmidt’s third double of the game.

Zach Thomas struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn the save for Port Angeles.

The Lefties offense came through with a number of extra-base hits on the night including a Lake double to score Bryce Matthews in the second inning, a two-run double by Oakley in the a Coleman Schmidt RBI double and a three-run home run over the right-field wall by Bryce Matthews, both in the fifth.
