Port Angeles graduate leads at county amateur

PORT ANGELES — Former Port Angeles High School and Pacific Lutheran University golfer Emily Cook cleaned up on her former home course as she led the gross and net leaderboards after one round of play in the 2019 Clallam County Amateur.

Cook, a 2010 Port Angeles High School graduate, shot a 1-over-par 73 at Peninsula Golf Club on Friday to lead Terry Ankerfelt and Michael Dupuis by one stroke in the competition’s First Flight.

Eric Bower and Kevin McCrossin were tied at 3-over-par 75. Nick Van was fourth with a 78 and Sequim softball coach Tim Lusk and Rick Hoover were tied for fifth at 79.

With handicaps factored into players’ scores, Cook posted a 7-under-par net 65, two strokes ahead of Ankerfelt.

Jim McCausland led the second flight gross scores with a 4-over-par 76, while Rena Peabody and Harry Phillips each shot 78.

Brian Anderson’s 12-over-par 84 had him atop the third flight while Marine Hirschfeld and Robb Reese were just behind with rounds of 86.

Play was underway in Saturday’s second round at Sunland Golf and Country Club, but results were unavailable before the print deadline.

Today’s final round tees off at 9 a.m.
