GOLF: Boys & Girls Club benefit tourney Friday has a few open spots

SOME SPOTS REMAIN for the 27th annual Boys & Girls Clubs Golf Tournament presented by 7 Cedars Casino at Sunland Golf & Country Club on Friday.

The event, part of Sequim’s Irrigation Festival celebration, will have a solid turnout, but there is room for “two or three more foursomes,” according to tournament organizer/Boys & Girls Club Resource Development Director Janet Gray.

Friday’s tournament is a four-person scramble format event with check-in beginning at 11 a.m. and a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Gray said the Irrigation Festival royalty will be on hand to personally deliver goodie bags to golfers before play begins.

Entry fees are $100 per player, or $400 per foursome, and includes green fees, range balls, cart and lunch.

Side games will be offered, including a $5 putt for wine which gets players three chances to sink a putt and bring home a bottle of vino (21 and older only).

A Golfer Package, which provides two mulligans, two throws and one putt for wine and one raffle entry, also is available for $25.

Gray said Price Ford is sponsoring a shot at a new 2018 Ford F-150 pickup truck on the par-3 15th hole.

Olympic Peninsula Title also is sponsoring a hole-in-one prize during the event.

A split-the-pot raffle also will be held with tickets going for $1.

As a side note, I spent my first summer break from college at Washington State working at the Sequim unit of the Boys & Girls Club and really got a sense for how well the club serves the communities of Sequim and Port Angeles. The level of need in our area is critical and the services offered are crucial for many, many young families.

Peninsula season opener

Sandy Granger checked in to say the Peninsula Lady Golfers recently opened the 2018 season with a breakfast and nine-hole scramble.

“A tasty breakfast was enjoyed in the clubhouse and the lady golfers welcomed the snowbird members back to Peninsula Golf Club,” Granger said.

“Captain Rena Peabody presented prizes for the scramble winners to the team of Ruth Thomson, Linda Bruch and Chris Anderson. In second place was the team of Rena Peabody, Barb Thompson, Helen Arnold and Sandy Granger.”

The ladies held their first business meeting of the season after play was over.

Granger said the Peninsula Lady Golfers gather on Wednesday mornings with a 9 a.m. tee time and visitors are most welcome to join in on the fun.

“We are looking forward to the season ahead,” Granger said.

Kent said the Disco Bay Thursday League will begin play Thursday, May 17 at 5 p.m.

Teams and individuals are being accepted for the league, which will play nine holes every Thursday night during the golf season. A GHIN handicap is not required to play.

Prep golfers standout

North Olympic Peninsula golfers won three of four individual championships last week at the Class 1A/2A Olympic League Boys and Girls Golf Championships hosted by Cedars at Dungeness.

The Sequim boys qualified four players to the 2A state tournament — league champion Paul Jacobsen won the event with a 1-under-par 71, followed by Blake Wiker (73), Andrew Vanderberg (75) and Josiah Carter (77).

Sequim’s Sarah Shea claimed the girls 2A championship with a 4-over-par 76 and will play in her third state tournament later this month.

Port Townsend’s McKenzie Lake won the 1A girls league crown with a round of 91. She played in the 1A West Central District Tournament late Tuesday at Gold Mountain Golf Club for a spot at state.
