GIRLS SOCCER: Riders post shutout in stormy conditions

BREMERTON — The Port Angeles girls soccer team bounced back from a loss to league-leading North Kitsap with a 2-0 shutout over Bremerton in foul weather.

Coach Daniel Horton said the weather “took a turn” during the game with high winds and rain and definitely affected the game.

Despite the relatively close final score, the Roughriders dominated, getting 15 shots in the first half and 22 overall. Bremerton had just seven shots with five on goal.

Scoring both goals was freshman Emma Desjardins, who, for the second time in a week, had a two-goal game. Desjardins’ first tally in the 18th minute was assisted by Stella Fradkin. She scored her second in the 48th minute with the assist going to Becca Manson. Kennedy Rognlien made five saves to earn the shutout.

Horton said the Riders still need to do a better job of finishing. Port Angeles missed a penalty kick, hit a crossbar and had some wide-open shots that went straight to Bremerton’s goalkeeper.

“It was one of those nights where we did so many things right, [but] we weren’t rewarding ourselves,” Horton said. “I feel like we are consistently on the verge of breaking out. The good news is, after every game, we find things to fix, and we’ve fixed a lot of things. We’re going to focus on finishing.”

With the win, the Riders (4-2, 6-2 overall) remain in third place in the Olympic League. They next play at home against Kingston (2-3, 2-4) at 7:15 p.m. today. Horton said Kingston isn’t as strong as it was last year, but that the Buccaneers are a dangerous and opportunistic team.

North Kitsap 2, Sequim 0

POULSBO — The Wolves went toe-to-toe against the league-leading North Kitsap Vikings, losing by just two goals, 2-0, to the No. 7-ranked team in the state.

“We knew North Kitsap is one of the top teams in our league, and our girls were up to it,” said assistant coach Vianney Cadanes. “They gave their best.

It was a team effort. They just continue to raise the bar for the team.”

Cadanes said Raimey Brewer stood out controlling the ball in the center of the field and that goalkeeper Lilli Anderson had another good game. “She has been absolutely fabulous for us. She made some great saves. She continues to shine.”

Sequim (2-4, 2-5 overall) will next host Bremerton (2-4, 4-4) at 7 p.m. in an important game today to help keep the Wolves in playoff position.
