GIRLS PREP ROUNDUP: East Jefferson wins eighth straight

Forks unbeaten in league; Neah Bay wins 30th in a row

CHIMACUM — Defense carried the East Jefferson girls basketball team to its eighth straight victory and second straight over rival Klahowya, 60-36 at Chimacum High School on Tuesday.

Penina Vailolo led the Rivals with 21 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

“Our defense came up huge,” East Jefferson coach Ethan Bates said. “Kaydence Plotner and Bre Huntingford have been doing a great job setting the tone on defense with their pressure and Penina [Vailolo] and Teri [Wiley] did a really good job getting steals and blocks. Really proud of their effort and selflessness out there.”

Plotner finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and six steals.

Kay Botkin added 13 points, and Wiley came through with eight rebounds and six steals.

East Jefferson (9-6) hosts Cascade Christian in Chimacum at 7 p.m. Saturday.

“Our defense played really well. We rebounded well and gave us a lot of second-chance points,” Hurn said.

Bainbridge 54, Port Angeles 30

BAINBRIDGE — The Roughriders were cold shooting the ball, didn’t rebound well and couldn’t get the stops and steals necessary for a road upset of the league-leading Spartans on Tuesday.

“[We] struggled to score throughout most of the game, shooting just 18 percent from the floor in the first three quarters. We hit 42 percent in the fourth quarter, but it was far too late by that time to make a difference in the game,” coach Michael Poindexter said.

Port Angeles was unable to crack the Spartans’ 2-3 zone, going 0-for-17 on 3-point attempts.

“We were far below our usual performance in picking up offensive rebounds, and we were also not able to get many steals,” Poindexter said.

“Bainbridge did a nice job of making us uncomfortable with their aggressive 2-3 zone.”

Lindsay Smith led the Riders with 13 points and nine rebounds. Teanna Clark added a dozen points and four rebounds and Sariah Doherty hauled down six boards. Lexie Smith had five blocked shots.

Port Angeles (5-3, 8-6) hosts Olympic at 7 p.m. Friday for the conclusion of a suspended game and then another full game immediately following.

“We struggled rebounding, making shots and taking care of the ball.”
