VASHON — Chimacum shook off a nine-day layoff between games with a 42-33 nonleague girls basketball victory against Vashon.
“Vashon is athletic and they have some big girls on the roster between 5-foot-11 and 6-foot-2,” Cowboys coach Trevor Huntingford said.
“We put together the best rebounding effort we’ve given all season. And the officials let them climb all over us, too.”
Huntingford said Jadeah Nordberg stepped up.
“Nordberg was fantastic on the boards,” Huntingford said. “She ended up with 12 boards and she dominated their posts all night — especially with us without Diamond Young. Jadeah cleaned everything up for us in longer minutes.”
Huntingford said Chimacum also did a good job of getting the Pirates to play at a faster pace than what they wanted.
“It was a good game for us,”Huntingford said. “They defended us well, we got them out of the 3-2 zone before halftime. We were whipping the ball around well to get the ball to the best open shot when they were in that zone and a lot of the time that meant Mia [McNair] getting a good look.”
McNair led all scorers with 24 points.
“I thought Mia rose to the occasion,” Huntingford said. “And it was probably the hardest I’ve seen her play in the attack and that opened up others for opportunities.”
The Cowboys (4-0, 9-5) visit South Whidbey tonight in another nonleague contest.
