DISTRICT GOLF: Port Angeles’ Flores, Bailey co-champs

Pair will join a contingent of Port Angeles girls, Sequim golfers at state tourney

SEQUIM — Port Angeles’ Edun Bailey and Phoenix Flores tied for first at the West Central District III golf championship held Tuesday at Cedars at Dungeness.

Bailey and Flores each shot 5-over-par 77 for a four-way tie with Orlando Chiquiti of Kingston and Jackson Martin of Orting. All four golfers will be headed to the state 2A tournament.

Also going to state as a No. 2 alternate will be Sequim’s Pryce Glasser, who came in ninth after shooting an 86.

League-champion Sequim already qualified three boys for the state tournament — Ben Sweet, Dominic Riccobene and Cole Smithson — in the Olympic League tournament held last week. They did not compete at district.

The Olympic League champion Port Angeles girls are also sending three to state — Piper Williams, Claire Osterberg and Lauryn Chapman, who likewise did not compete at district. Sequim’s Hannah Wagner is also headed to state with her qualifying score at the league tournament.

At district, Port Angeles’ Nate Anderson shot a 91, while Sequim’s Julissa Julmist shot a 103, Emily Post a 116 and Sydney Price a 116. Allie Klemkow of White River won the girls district championship with an 85.

For the first time in several years, the state golf tournaments are being held west of the Cascades.

The 2A girls tournament begins Tuesday at Tumwater Valley Golf Club. The 2A boys tournament begins Tuesday at the Capitol City Golf Club in Olympia on Tuesday.
