PORT ANGELES — For the second time in two years against the same team, the Port Angeles women’s soccer team set a school scoring record, beating Shoreline 23-0 at Wally Sigmar Field on Saturday.
Shoreline has a struggling women’s program. The Dolphins have yet to score in five games this year and were also beaten 18-0 by Skagit Valley. In 2023, Peninsula beat Shoreline 20-0 to set the previous school scoring record.
A number of reserves scored for the Pirates, especially in the second half when the entire bench got to play. A total of 25 Peninsula women got into the game. Peninsula was led by Grace Widergren, who scored five goals and added a pair of assists.
ISIS-Jade Bryant had a hat trick and an assist, while Atianna Tauiai-Fuamata Ma’afala, Kamalani Yamashita, Cailey Ridgeway, Baylee Rawlinson and Auzie Eaton all scored two goals each.
Shiori Shintaku had a goal and three assists, while Elise Mfaffeo, Jaiden King, Madie Haggart and Tayen Munger all scored a goal.
With the victory, the women remain on top of the North Region standings at 4-0-1. The women should have a much more competitive game Wednesday at a good Bellevue (2-0-2, 2-1-3) squad.
Men’s game
The men’s game was much more competitive with the Pirates coming away with a 4-0 victory to remain on top of the North Region.
Rei Sato got the men on the board right away in the eight minute with an assist to Edwin Diaz.
The game went to the half with Peninsula holding on to a 1-0 lead. The Pirates got an insurance goal in the 59th minute from Angel Sandoval. The Pirates scored twice late with Austin Collins collecting a goal in the 80th minute with the assist to Clemens Bordewiech and Jack Norman scoring in the 89th minute, with the assisting going to Noah Moe.
The shots were relatively even with Peninsula getting nine shots on goal to six for Shoreline. Pirates goalkeeper Kristian Holdsworth earned the shutout by making six saves.
With the victory, the Pirates improved to 4-0-1 in the North Region (5-0-1 overall) with 13 points, one point behind first place Whatcom (4-0-2 in the North Region), which has played an extra game. Peninsula’s lone tie was against Whatcom.
Peninsula next travels to Bellevue (2-2-0, 4-2-0) on Wednesday.
