COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Pirates shoot lights out in win over Green River

MOUNT VERNON — Davien Harris-Williams had one of his worst games for the Peninsula basketball men Friday.

And yet, showing the team’s new scoring depth, it was no problem for the Pirates as they shot more than 50 percent from the floor and scored 93 points in a 93-82 win over Green River in the opening game of the Skagit Valley Turkey Tournament.

Harris-Williams, last year’s leading scorer for the Pirates, had a rough night shooting, going 2 for 14 from the floor and 0 for 7 from 3-point range. Last year, that would have certainly spelled doom for Peninsula.

But not this year. The rest of the team shot 61.2 percent, including 66.7 percent from 3-point range, as the Pirates had their highest-scoring game of the year.

“That was what we wanted when we were recruiting,” said Peninsula head coach Donald Rollman.

Rollman said Green River was a high-energy, high-scoring team.

“We matched them [Green River] at every turn,” Rollman said. “We shot the ball extremely well. It was a total team effort last night.”

Jaylin Reed had his best game of the year for the Pirates, scoring 24 points on 8 for 12 shooting, including 4 for 7 from beyond the 3-point arc. After three games, Reed is averaging 18.7 points a game for the Pirates.

Everett Rorres-Kahapea also had his best game of the year, shooting 5 for 8 from 3-point range for 19 points.

Malik Moore added a double-double with 16 points on 5 for 7 shooting from the floor and 10 rebounds. Port Angeles graduate Gabe Long shot 2 for 2 on his 3-pointers and added eight points.

Rollman said one of Long’s 3-pointers was crucial as it came right at the halftime buzzer to give the Pirates an eight-point lead (46-38) going into the break.

Harris led the Pirates in assists with five. Rollman said despite the off night shooting, Harris played well defending and distributing the ball.

Peninsula (2-1) played Pierce (1-3) on Saturday after press deadline and will play Northwest Indian College, a non-NWAC school, in the finale of the Turkey Tournament at 11 a.m. today.
