COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Pirate men split final two games at Tacoma tourney

TACOMA — The Peninsula basketball men bounced back from a loss to throttle Tacoma 98-75 Sunday in the Pirates’ highest-scoring game of the year so far.

The Pirates won two out of three games at the Tacoma Crossover Tournament. They beat Big Bend 93-84 on Friday and lost to Umpqua 90-74 on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Peninsula men gave up 50 first-half points to Umpqua and couldn’t dig out of a double-digit halftime deficit in a 90-74 loss at the Tacoma Crossover Tournament at Tacoma College, snapping the Pirates’ three-game winning streak.

Umpqua took a 50-38 lead into the half.

Zach Day came off the bench to lead the Pirates with 14 points, while Colby Jackson had 12, Marky Adams 10 and Trent Warren and Eli-sha Sheppard nine each. Adams led the team with six rebounds.

The Pirates (7-4) next play Yakima Valley in the Clackamas Holiday Tournament in Portland on Dec. 28.

Women’s Basketball

Walla Walla 82, Peninsula 52 Centralia 65, Peninsula 55

CENTRALIA — The Peninsula basketball women are still looking for their first win of the season after dropping two games at the West Region Crossover Tournament at Centralia College.

The women lost Sunday to Walla Walla 82-52 and 65-55 to Centralia on Saturday.

In Sunday’s loss Jamellia Clark led the Pirate with 18 points, while Tiffani Smith scored 14.

In Saturday’s game, the women were up at the half 31-30, but Centralia jumped into the lead thanks to a 21-14 third quarter.

Ashlynn Sharp led the Pirates in this game with 18 points, while Clark had 14. Kayla Alvarez and Smith each scored eight.

Peninsula (0-8) next plays Clark College in Wenatchee on Dec. 28.
