COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Peninsula women split; men lose in OT

TACOMA — The Peninsula women split a pair of games this weekend at the Pierce College Tournament, losing only their second game of the year 67-55 to Wenatchee Valley on Sunday after beating Pierce 60-47 Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Peninsula men dug out of a huge hole to force overtime against Centralia on Sunday, but lost 100-86 at the Pirate-Triton Classic at Edmonds College.

Wenatchee Valley, a good 6-2 team, got off to a fast start against the PC women, putting the Pirates in an 18-6 hole after the first quarter. The Knights built up that lead to 34-16 midway through the second quarter.

Wenatchee was still hanging on to a 47-34 lead in the fourth quarter when the Pirates went on an 11-4 rally behind five points from Leilani Padilla and four from Kuutuuq Danner to cut the score to 51-45 with 6:55 left. That was as close as the Pirates could manage, however, as the Knights responded with an 8-2 run to open the lead back up to 12 points at 59-47. The Pirates were never able to get closer than nine points after that.

Padilla led the Pirates with 11 points and five assists, while Danner scored 10 to go with seven rebounds. Olivia Williams and Gina McCaulley each scored eight.

In Saturday’s game, the Pirates entered the fourth quarter tied with Pierce 40-40, but they buried the Raiders witha 20-7 fourth quarter to salt the game away. Peninsula held Pierce to 2 for 12 shooting from the floor in that fourth quarter.

Logan Luke led the Pirates with 13 points and Danner scored 10. Williams, Padilla and Ashlynn Sharp all added eight points. Sharp didn’t shoot well, but she added eight boards, three steals and two blocks. Sunshine Vicente also had eight rebounds.

The Peninsula women (5-2) will next play Friday at the Longview College Crossover Tournament against Big Bend.

EDMONDS — The Peninsula men came roaring back from an 8-point deficit in the final 5:40 of regulation to force overtime, but immediately fell in a big hole in OT and lost to Clackamas 100-86 Sunday afternoon at the Pirate-Triton Classic at Edmonds College.

It was the second heartbreaking overtime loss of the year for the Pirates.

Clackamas built up a lead as big as 15 points in the second half, but Peninsula fought back, going on a 14-6 run over the final 5:40 of the second half, erasing a 75-67 Cougars’ lead. Samuel Kahapea hit two 3-pointers during the big run and Eli’sha Sheppard, who scored 23 total, had buckets in 37 seconds as regulation ended in an 81-all tie.

The Cougars scored the first eight points of overtime to put the Pirates in a big hole they couldn’t climb out of again.

The Pirates made 12 3-pointers, with Kahapea hitting four and Sheppard three. Kahapea finished with 18 points, while James Buckley had 12 and Davien Harris-Williams 11.

In Saturday’s game, the Peninsula men fell way behind Centralia early and got down by as many as 20 in the second half, as it was too big of a hole to climb out of in a 64-51 loss Saturday.

Harris-Williams led the team with 16 points, while Leo Gonzalez, Kelly and Sheppard all scored eight.

Port Angeles’ Luke Angevine hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored six points.

The Peninsula men (1-6) will play Chemeteka out of Oregon on Friday in the South Region Crossover Tournament in Salem, Ore.
