COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Peninsula teams swept at Edmonds

EDMONDS — The Peninsula women got off to a slow start against Edmonds, came roaring back to make it close all game, but ultimately fell in a 62-54 road loss as the Pirates are still looking for a North Division win.

A shorthanded men’s team also lost to Edmonds 77-46.

The Pirates had just seven points in the first quarter, but went on a 9-0 run in the second to briefly take a 16-14 lead. The game remained close throughout with neither team getting ahead by more than five points until the final seconds of the contest.

The Pirates’ last lead of the game was at 51-50 after Kuutuuq Danner made a layup with 4:18 left in the fourth.

The Pirates were still down just 56-54 with 1:39 left in the game when the Tritons’ Rachael Balagso made a layup and was fouled for a three-point play. The Pirates were never able to get close again as Balagso made three more free throws in the final seconds to keep Peninsula at bay.

Peninsula was led by Danner with 18 points, while Logan Luke had 17. Luke and Leilani Padilla each led the team with seven rebounds each. Ashlynn Sharp had eight assists.

Peninsula (0-2, 7-7) will next play Skagit Valley (2-0, 9-7) at home at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
