COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Millie Long scores 25 as Peninsula women move into first-place tie with win over Whatcom

Pirate men hit the century mark in victory

BELLINGHAM — Peninsula College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams sailed past Whatcom in a pair of road contests Wednesday.

The No. 6-ranked Pirate women edged No. 4 Whatcom 73-61, handing the Orcas (9-1, 16-2) their first North Division defeat in a crucial tussle for a share of the division’s top spot.

Port Angeles’ Millie Long knocked down 80 percent of her foul shots (12 of 15) on her way to a game-high 25 points, along with seven assists, six rebounds, two steals and a block.

Kelli-Jade Smith was on fire from outside for the Pirates, canning 6 of 9 3-point shots on her way to 22 points, three assists and three rebounds.

Sequim’s Hope Glasser added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds for Peninsula (9-1, 18-3).

Jaylin Reed posted 38 points and 11 rebounds as the Peninsula men (6-4, 14-8) throttled last-place Whatcom (0-10, 8-16) 101-63. Reed hit 7 of 13 3s in the game.

Mikey Medlock earned the start for the Pirates and had 15 points and five boards.

The Pirates return home for a Saturday doubleheader against Edmonds with the women’s game at 4 p.m. and the men at 6 p.m.
