Forks boosts record to 9-1 after win over Ilwaco

SEQUIM — The Sequim boys basketball remained perfect, nearly doubling up Fife in a 75-40 win Friday.

The victory pushed the Wolves’ record to 8-0 ahead of a huge matchup Tuesday night against Olympic Peninsula rival Port Angeles.

The Wolves got up 68-24 early in the fourth quarter, cruising over the final six minutes with the reserves getting a chance to play. And that was against a team that beat North Mason, which is 2-2 in the Olympic League.

Sequim had a lot of balance with six players with at least six points. The Wolves were led by Jericho Julmist, who hit three 3-pointers and scored 20. Charlie Grider had his biggest game of the year with 17 points and Ethan Melnick hit three 3-pointers to score 13. Solomon Sheppard, Hunter Tennell and Mason Rapelje all scored six.

The Wolves aren’t just undefeated, they are winning with an average margin of victory of 27.6 points. They have had only two games this year in which their opponents lost by fewer than 20 points.

Sequim (4-0, 9-0) plays the Roughriders (1-3, 4-5) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Forks 50, Ilwaco 33

ILWACO — The Forks boys basketball team overcame poor shooting and a slow start to pull away from Ilwaco 50-33 in a Pacific 2B League opener Friday.

“It as still 2-0 after six minutes,” said coach Keith Weekes.

Fortunately, the Spartans played great defense, allowing only 11 points in the first half, and got a fantastic game from Landen Olson.

Olson finished the game with 18 points and 15 rebounds, leading the Spartans in both categories.

“He showed up last night. He was everywhere and doing everything. And we needed it,” Weekes said.

Titus Rowley had 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Noah Foster scored eight. Brody Lausche had 10 rebounds.

“Ilwaco is a tough place to play. They’re younger this year but still well-coached,” Weekes said.

Forks (1-0, 9-1) returns to league action against Raymond-South Bend (2-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Neah Bay 53, MVC 46 Neah Bay 63, LaConner 53

MOUNT VERNON — The Neah Bay boys basketball team got a huge weekend from Tyler Swan in a pair of wins over La Conner and Mount Vernon Christian at the Mount Vernon Christian Tournament.

The Red Devils (6-1) won 53-46 over Mount Vernon Christian on Saturday, as Swan had 24 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. LeAnthony Jimmicum scored 14.

Swan’s game Friday against LaConner was even better, as he had a rare 20-20 game with 21 points and 21 rebounds. He hit a pair of 3-pointers.

Jodell Wimberly scored 13 and Makyah Chambers 10. Mathias Greene added six.

East Jefferson 48, University Prep 41

SEATTLE — The East Jefferson boys basketball team beat University Prep 48-41 on Friday for its second win of the year.

“I thought our group competed well, especially from the middle of the third quarter on,” said coach Adam Washburn. “I’m still waiting to see our group stack four really competitive quarters together. I thought Rene Martin’s defense on their point guard was key to our second-half run. We made some shots and really controlled the game in the fourth quarter.”

Luke O’Hara led the Rivals with 21 points while Julius Mercado came up from teh JV squad to score 10. John Richard Mercado had eight.

East Jefferson (2-5) next hosts Klahowya (2-8) in Port Townsend at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
