ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Port Angeles basketball player Jaida Wood and Sequim wrestler Kiara Pierson

With so many postseason stars this week, it was hard to single out just one Athlete of the Week.

First, Kiara Pierson of Sequim won the 135-pound Region 2 wrestling championship. She went 3-0 at regionals, winning the championship with a dramatic 3-1 sudden victory in overtime.

Pierson makes a return trip to the Mat Classic state wrestling championship.

Last year, wrestling at 120 pounds, Pierson won five out six matches at the Mat Classic and finished third in the state.

Our second athlete is Jaida Wood, one of three super-froshes for the Port Angeles Roughriders girls basketball team.

Wood, along with fellow freshmen Millie Long and Madison Cooke, are playing heavy minutes for the Riders, who have won 13 straight and are ranked No. 4 in the state in RPI.

On Friday, Wood led the Riders with 14 points, helping Port Angeles beat Foster 55-30 in the WCD II 2A tournament. With the win, the Riders have already qualified for regionals, just one step away from the state basketball tournament.

Athlete of the Week is brought to you by the sports department at the Peninsula Daily News along with the sponsorship of Swain’s General Store serving Clallam and Jefferson counties since 1957.
