ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Jolene Vaara, Sequim girls basketball; and Keira Johnson, Forks girls basketball

Two Olympic Peninsula girls’ basketball players have gotten off to scorching starts this young season, earning our co-Athletes of the Week for this week.

In her past two games for the Forks Spartans, both victories, Forks’ Keira Johnson has averaged 30.0 points a game. She scored 32 in a 74-25 win over South Bend on Friday. This came after a 28-point performance Wednesday in a 59-15 win over North Beach.

Meanwhile, Sequim’s Jolene Vaara has been all-everything for the Wolves. Over four games this year for the unbeaten Wolves, Vaara has averaged 23.3 points a game and 6.5 rebounds. She scored 27 points and pulled down nine boards in a Dec. 5 win over Neah Bay, scored 29 points against Bainbridge on Dec. 6.

Her defense shined in a Thursday win over Bremerton, scoring 20 points, pulling down six rebounds and racking up five steals. On Saturday, she had another great all-around game filling up the scorebook with 17 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Johnson and Vaara all year-round athletes for Forks and Sequim. Johnson plays volleyball and softball for the Spartans while Vaara plays volleyball and runs track for the Wolves.
