ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Gus Halberg, Port Angeles soccer; Evan Cisneros, Sequim soccer

In a remarkable day of postseason soccer at Peninsula College’s Wally Sigmar Field on Saturday, two Olympic Peninsula athletes stood out with their own remarkable performances.

Sequim won its District 3 tournament opener 2-1 in overtime against Steilacoom as Evan Cisneros scored the game-winner on a great through pass from Josh Alcaraz.

Cisneros also had the game-winner last week in a 1-0 win over Port Angeles that helped the Wolves qualify for postseason.

What Port Angeles keeper Gus Halberg did hours later on the same field was epic. Port Angeles and Olympic went to shootouts after neither team could score through regulation and overtime. Halberg could have been intimidated by Olympic’s goalkeeper Mariano Pena, who made two truly spectacular saves in overtime to send the game to PKs.

But he wasn’t. Halberg went toe-to-toe with Pena through nine nerve-wracking rounds of the shootout, then made a great save on the 10th kick, guessing correctly on the shot and punching the ball high in the air and out. Halberg, a senior who never played high school soccer before this year, then had to take a penalty kick himself, calmly converting his shot to beat Pena and win the game.
