ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Cash Holmes, East Jefferson basketball; Aidan Salazar, Forks basketball

Our Athletes of the Week for this week play hoops on opposite ends of the Olympic Peninsula.

In Forks, Aidan Salazar had a monster game when the Spartans basketball team really needed it in the postseason. He hit six 3-pointers Saturday against Rainier and poured in 35 points as Forks was able to get past Rainier 72-66 in overtime. He also had a 19-point effort in a loss earlier in the week.

The Spartans will need all they can get from Salazar on Wednesday as they face No. 1-ranked Napavine in the second round of the district playoffs. Win or lose, however, Forks continues to move on in the tournament.

Cash Holmes has also been clutch for the East Jefferson boys this past week. Holmes scored 24 points, shooting a spectacular 9-for-11 from the floor and 6-for-8 from 3-point range in a 75-49 win Jan. 30 over Charles Wright. He hit another five 3-pointers and scored 17 points in a crucial win Friday over Bellevue Christian. The two Nisqually League victories have East Jefferson at .500 in league with a good chance to make postseason.
