ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Wiinuk Martin, Neah Bay girls basketball

Pretty much the entire starting five for the Neah Bay girls basketball team contributed to the team’s third straight state Class 1B championship this weekend at the Spokane Arena.

While Qwaapeys Greene and Cerise Moss had big games for the Red Devils in the state tournament, one unsung player on the 23-1 team was Wiinuk Martin.

Martin, who goes by “NuNu,” had a pair of huge games in the state semifinals and finals. In the semis Friday against Wellpinit, a 53-30 Neah Bay victory, she contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.

In the finals against Garfield-Palouse, Martin had a double-double in the Red Devils’ 46-36 victory, scoring 11 points to go with 11 rebounds.

Martin and all four of the other starters will be back for Neah Bay next year as the Red Devils begin a quest for four straight state championships.
