ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Isaiah Shamp, Port Angeles basketball

The Port Angeles boys basketball team had one of its most remarkable victories ever last week and star player Isaiah Shamp was right in the middle of it.

The Riders were down 13 points with under 4 minutes left to play and erupted for 11 points in just 37 seconds. Shamp had two steals during that outburst.

Then, with Sammamish still leading with 24 seconds left to play, Shamp hit what turned out to be the game-winning shot with 24 seconds left to play to give Port Angeles a 68-67 lead. The Riders’ defense held on the final possession for a huge win over a strong 2A opponent.

In addition to his defensive heroics, the 6-foot-6 Shamp finished the game with 29 points, scoring most of his points with a clever variety of inside moves.

Shamp and his teammates begin Olympic League play Friday at Bremerton.
