ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Gracie Chartraw, Sequim girls basketball

The Sequim girls basketball team graduated a lot of seniors off last year’s Olympic League championship squad, including Hannah Bates and Jelissa Julmist, who now play for Peninsula College.

However, the Wolves already have a new star in freshman Gracie Chartraw, who started her first varsity game last week against Bainbridge.

And what a debut it was. Freshmen, even the talented ones, rarely start at the 2A level and usually need a year or two of JV before moving up to varsity.

Chartraw, who plays the guard position, responded to her first game by shooting 4-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc and scoring 24 points against a tough 3A team.. She added six rebounds. her coach Joclin Julmist said “she was special at times.”

The Wolves nearly knocked off the Spartans, falling by just three points 51-48 to the bigger school. It looks like the future is bright for the Sequim girls’ basketball team.
