AREA SPORTS: YMCA fall basketball registration underway

Youth hoops offered this fall by YMCA

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula YMCA will hold fall youth basketball programs at its Sequim and Port Angeles locations beginning Sept. 15.

Sequim age groups are 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8, and Port Angeles age groups are 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-11 and girls ages 12-14.

The 3-4 age group will meet for eight weeks and will play with a mini basketball and a 7-foot hoop.

Ages 5-6 will use a mini basketball and an 8-foot hoop.

Registration is $80, $65 for YMCA members.

Ages 7-8 will play with a junior ball and a 9-foot hoop, with two practices a week and games on Saturdays.

Ages 9-11 will meet for 10 weeks with two practices per week and games on Saturdays.

Girls ages 12-14 will play in a middle school girls league with games scored and played with a women’s ball and regulation hoop.

The cost is $90 for the public, $75 for members.

River Center tourney

SEQUIM — The Dungeness River Nature Center will present the seventh annual River Center Charity Golf Tournament at The Cedars at Dungeness on Saturday.

The annual tournament brings people together in support of local environmental education.

The tournament will follow a four-person scramble format and is open to golfers of all skill levels. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., and the $125 entry fee includes green fees, cart, range balls, lunch and opportunities to win a variety of prizes throughout the day.

As part of the festivities, participants and non-participants are invited to enter a raffle drawing for a Ride1Up Café Cruiser eBike, valued at $1,200. The drawing will take place during the tournament, but you do not need to be present to win.

Raffle tickets are $20 each and can be purchased in person at the Dungeness River Nature Center, 1943 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim, or by phone at 360-681-4076 through today.

Soccer swap Sunday

SEQUIM — Sequim Junior Soccer will hold its annual Soccer Swap equipment exchange Sunday at the Albert Haller Soccer Fields.

The swap will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Players can bring in cleats, shin guards and other soccer equipment they may have outgrown and swap for gently used items.

Little Lifesavers

FORKS — A Free Little Lifesavers emergency awareness/preparedness event will be held from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Forks Athletic/Aquatic Center on Maple Avenue.

This event is for ages 4 to 10 years old. It will cover what is an emergency, how to recognize an emergency, basic first aid, family escape/evacuation plans, internet/social media danger awareness and choking.
