Riders bounce back with shutout win over Bucs
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles successfully defended an early one-goal lead before adding an insurance score late in a 2-0 shutout victory against Kingston in a girls soccer contest on Thursday at Wally Sigmar Field.
“Our goal was to stay healthy and work some swing players up from JV and get some playing time for the girls before we start the postseason,” coach Daniel Horton said. “We wanted to get the win because Kingston has improved so much since the first time we saw them.”
The Roughriders scored quickly when Izzy Felton found the back of the net in the third minute off an assist by Paige Mason.
“After that, Kingston stiffened up and played us well. We had possessions and more chances. They were kind of bend but don’t break. Their goalkeeper made a ton of great saves to keep it a one-goal game.”
Becca Manson’s play defensively was important for Port Angeles.
“We were basically without our midfield for a good chunk of the game,” Horton said. “Becca Manson has been starting all year at sweeper and she really played well, she stepped up, battled for every 50/50 ball, she gave our center backs and [goalkeeper] Saylah Commerton a little bit of a break. She was able to track down everything.”
Julia Baeder notched the insurance goal, crashing the net after a Kingston save to poke the ball home in the 70th minute.
Port Angeles (9-4-0) wraps the regular season with senior night tonight against Bremerton at Sigmar Field.
Sequim Trunk-or-Treat
SEQUIM — Sequim Little League will host a Trunk-or-Treat event at the Little League Fields, 124 W. Silberhorn Road, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
The batting cages will be transformed into a haunted house. Ballpark fare will be available in the concession stand, plenty of candy will be given away and the Seahawks game will be broadcast.
Family friendly activities also include mega Jenga, ring toss, cornhole and mini golf.
Admission is by donation (cash or card). Donations will go toward field improvements and other projects in advance of the 2023 season.
PBL hoops action
PORT ANGELES — Black Diamond Electric improved to 2-0 Wednesday with a 51-40 Peninsula Basketball League victory over Aarow Marine, which slipped to 0-2.
Bryant Hoch poured in 20 and Ben Shamp had nine for Black Diamond. Luke Angevine had 11 and Lambros Rogers 10 for the Aarow Marine men.
Burns planned in Park
The Olympic Interagency Fire Management Program and park road crew have planned and prepared for prescribed burns of five woody debris piles beginning Monday.
The debris piles are located in the Lower Queets, Hoh, Sol Duc and Elwha maintenance areas of Olympic National Park. Road clearing operations in Olympic National Park generate large amounts of debris and pile burning is the most convenient and cost-effective method of disposal.
Smoke will be visible at times from nearby trails and roadways.
