Chimacum alumni Shaw earns WOU hall of Fame call
MONMOUTH, Ore. — Former Chimacum High School athletic standout and longtime college basketball coach Jim Shaw will be inducted into the Western Oregon Athletics Hall of Fame today at his alma mater, Western Oregon University.
Shaw attended Chimacum High School where he was an all-state performer in both basketball and football, graduating in 1981.
A member of the Wolves’ basketball team from 1982-85, Shaw earned NAIA All-American honorable mention in 1983-84, and was an all-region first team selection. Shaw led the Wolves in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and assists during the 1984-85 season and was named Evergreen Conference MVP. His teams posted a 72-20 record.
After a lengthy career climbing the ladder in college basketball, Shaw returned as head coach at Western Oregon from 2015-19, going 102-30 with two Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year awards and three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.
Before taking over at Western Oregon, Shaw spent two seasons at St. Mary’s with Randy Bennett; nine at Washington (winning five Pac-10 titles) with Lorenzo Romar; and five at Oklahoma (wining three Big 12 titles and advancing to a Final Four) with Kelvin Sampson. He also was on board at Oregon State when the Beavers featured future Sonic point guard and NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton.
Shaw is currently the associate head men’s basketball coach at Washington State.

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominations for new inductees through Oct. 31 for its next induction ceremony in the spring of 2023.
College employees, the community and alumni may nominate individuals or teams who have made outstanding contributions to PC Athletics.

Pirate men, women win
SHORELINE — The Peninsula College men’s and women’s soccer team’s each pitched shutouts against Shoreline on Friday.
Playing in matches bumped back twice this week due to poor air quality, the Pirate women smashed the Dolphins 7-0.
Port Angeles’ Millie Long scored the first two goals for the Pirates in the sixth and 21st minutes and capped her hat trick with a goal at the 60-minute mark.
Long has 16 goals on the season, good for second in the NWAC and is third overall in points (37).
Sequim freshman Hannah Wagner also got on the board, scoring her second goal of the season for Peninsula (8-0-0, 10-0-1).
The Pirate women host Bellevue at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The Pirate men scored three goals in the first 11 minutes to overwhelm Shoreline 4-0.
Goals were scored by Brian Guzman, Alfie Tucker, Alfonso Edfeldt and Hadrien Pena.
Peninsula yielded just two shots by the Dolphins with goalkeeper Rind Vlieg earning his first shut out of the season.
Peninsula (10-2-2, 13-2-2) visits Edmonds today.
