Swain’s wins Olympic Jr. Babe Ruth title game

PORT ANGELES — Swain’s came out on top of the Olympic Junior Babe Ruth pack with a 12-7 championship game win over Athlete’s Choice at Volunteer Field.

The champs opened up the scoring with four runs in the top of the third including an RBI single by Aidan Swenson and a two-out, two-RBI shot to right center by Tate Alton.

Athlete’s Choice tied the game up quickly with four runs in the bottom half of the inning on hits by Cole Johnson, Kody Williams and Nathan Basden to tie up the score.

Swain’s took the lead for good in the fifth, loading the bases when Jordan Shumway was hit by a pitch, Luke Flodstrom singled and Alton.

Bryton Amsdill came up and executed what Swain’s coach Eric Flodstrom described “as a perfect, Scott Brodhun Aggies-era double squeeze bunt” bringing in two runs with Alton coming in on a wild pitch.

Athlete’s Choice cut the lead to 7-5 after five innings on a Kaden Indelicato hit and a steal of home.

Swain’s added runs on an RBI double by Joseph Ritchie and a Luke Flodstrom single for a 9-5 lead, but Athlete’s Choice again cut the lead to 9-7 after an RBI triple by Ezra Townsend and an RBI single by Cole Johnson.

Three insurance runs were added in the top of the seventh when Swain’s 15-year-olds Amsdill, Swenson and Tanner Jacobsen all took advantage of their last Junior Babe Ruth at-bats and singled and scored.

Flodstrom and Alton combined for Swain’s on the mound, striking out seven and walking five.

“They were both able to buckle down and strand runners on base in crucial situations,” Flodstrom said.

Johnson, Townsend and Brian Guttormsen combined on the mound for 10 strikeouts and seven walks for Athlete’s Choice.
