Forks’ Dahlgren competes in college
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Forks’ Jack Dahlgren contributed to Grays Harbor College’s ninth-place finish at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association Duals Championship last weekend at Liberty University.
After opening with losses to host Liberty, 48-7, and Maryland-Baltimore County, 35-24, the Chokers downed Washington State, 43-16, Maine, 48-11, and Toledo 33-19.
The 197-pound Dahlgren recorded the most impressive win against Maine, according to Grays Harbor coach Phillip Pine. The fomer Forks standout convincingly beat two-time All-American River Robertson, 9-2.
He also earned a first-round pin of Maryland-Baltimore County’s Timothy Carter at 1:14 and fell in a 14-3 major decision while wrestling up at the 235-pound class against Liberty’s Austin Amos.
A freshman, Dahlgren is ranked third nationally in his weight class.
Sequim’s McMullin fares well
SEATTLE — Sequim’s Jasmine McMullin placed third and posted an NCAA Division II provisional-qualifying mark in the triple jump as Western Washington University added nine marks to the school’s top 10 record books during the season-opening UW Preview earlier this month.
McMullin, a senior for the Vikings and a 2013 Sequim graduate, was the top Division II placer among 18 competitors with a leap of 39-4 1/2 feet in the triple jump to record a provisional-qualifying mark.
She won the triple jump at the GNAC Indoor Championships in 2015 and 2016, and was an All-American in the triple jump during 2016. Her personal-best mark of 12.22 meters (40-1 ¼) is the indoor school record.
“It was good to see her do that,” Western head coach Pee Wee Halsell said of McMullin’s performance. “She was very consistent right around the 12-meter mark with her jumps, so that was good to see.”
