PA’s Wheeler will pitch for NW Christian

LONGVIEW — A leader whose effort and production in the pitcher’s circle or in the paint for her high school and junior college softball and basketball programs inspired her teammates, Port Angeles’ Nizhoni Wheeler officially became a Beacon this week.

Wheeler signed to play softball for Northwest Christian University, an NAIA school in Eugene, Ore., that competes in the Cascade Collegiate Conference alongside schools such as recently crowned NAIA champion Southern Oregon.

A 2017 Port Angeles High School graduate, Wheeler led the Roughriders to a second-place finish at the Class 2A state softball tournament her senior season and was a two-time All-Peninsula Softball MVP and also an All-Peninsula Basketball MVP.

She went 10-6 with one save and a 5.54 ERA in 115 innings, striking out 68 this spring, as the Red Devils advanced to the NWAC Tournament.

Youth softball tourney

LA PUSH — A three-day coed 13U youth softball tournament will be held as part of Quileute Days July 19-21.

Entry fees are $175 per team.

The tournament champs will take home jackets, while the runner-ups will win pullovers and third-place teams will receive sweatshirts.

Youth soccer camps

Registration for Port Angeles Youth Soccer Summer Camps with Peninsula College Pirates Soccer is underway at www.paysc.com.

The camps are held at Wally Sigmar Field at Peninsula College with Pirate players and coaches providing instruction.

The first camp session will run from June 24-28.

The second will run from July 22-26.

Players in the U8 and U9 age range (birth years 2010 and 2011) will practice from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at each session and registration is $35.

Players in the U-10 to U16 age range (birth years 2003 to 2009) will practice from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and registration is $100.

Swim club fundraiser

PORT ANGELES — Tickets are on sale for a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the Port Angeles Swim Club.

Black Diamond Junction will play music at the event set for Harbinger Winery, 2358 W. U.S. Highway 101, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

The event also will feature dinner, dessert, drinks and a silent auction.

Tickets are $45 and are available by emailing paswimclub@gmail.com.
