Wheeler named NWAC Player of the Week

LONGVIEW — Port Angeles High School alum Nizhoni Wheeler was named the Northwest Athletic Conference’s Under Armour Player of the Week this week as a member of the Lower Community College women’s basketball team.

Wheeler averaged 21 points on 58.3 percent shooting from the floor, 5.7 rebounds and 5.7 blocks per game in three wins last week.

Wheeler is leading the NWAC in blocks with 59. She is ninth in field goal average at 52.6 percent and is averaging 15.3 points a game, 17th in the NWAC.

“[Wheeler] is major impact player for us. Her presence in the paint makes our offense run,” said Red Devils head coach Lucas Myers. “In the last couple weeks Nizhoni has dealt with double and sometimes even triple teams all while still being efficient on the offensive end, either by scoring or passing it out to our great shooters. [Wheeler] is a major part of why we as a team have been steadily improving this year and were able to secure a West Region Championship. We are proud of her growth on and off the court.”

Nizhoni’s sister Cheyenne also plays for Lower Columbia. The Red Devils won the West Region with a 20-9 record and are in the NWAC Tournament. If the Peninsula women make the NWAC semifinals, they may face the Wheelers and Lower Columbia in the tournament.
