AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles’ Cole Uvila makes minor league debut for Spokane

SPOKANE — Port Angeles’ Cole Uvila struck out two batters in one scoreless inning in relief in his minor league debut with the Spokane Indians in a 3-2 loss to the Boise Hawks on Monday night.

Uvila entered with the score tied 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning. He allowed a leadoff single, but the Boise baserunner was thrown out attempting to steal second. Uvila then recorded back-to-back swinging strikeouts to end the inning.

A 2012 Port Angeles High School graduate, Uvila was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 40th and final round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Georgia Gwinnett College.

Spokane is the Rangers Class A-Short Season minor league affiliate and competes in the Northwest League.

Volleyball camp

PORT ANGELES — A volleyball camp for girls entering kindergarten through ninth grade and boys in kindergarten through fifth grade will be held at the Port Angeles High School gym Monday through Thursday, June 25-28.

Sixth- through ninth-graders will attend from 9 a.m. to noon, while boys and girls entering kindergarten through fifth graders will go from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

All skill levels are welcome. The camp focuses on the fundamentals of the game as well as teaching the movements through fun games and activities.

Different levels of competition are introduced as the camp continues through the week based on levels of experience and growth.

The cost is $50.

Camp coaches include Port Angeles volleyball coach Christine Halberg and her high school and middle school coaches as well as returning Roughrider players.

Youth hoops clinic

PORT ANGELES — A girls basketball youth clinic for players going into sixth through ninth grade will be offered by the Port Angeles High School girls basketball program today and Thursday.

The clinic will be held at the Port Angeles High School gym from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

Roughrider coaches and players will lead the clinic.

The cost is $45 and is payable at the door today.

Gymnastics classes

PORT ANGELES — Klahhane Gymnastics is registering now for summer gymnastics for age 2 through grade eight and Ninja Zone Classes for kids aged 4 to 11. Registration hours are Wednesday through Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Classes begin July 2 and will continue through Aug. 16.

Flexible scheduling with the purchase of a package of individual classes makes it easy for families to schedule individual classes around other activities throughout the summer. Register early for best choice of days and times.

The schedule, class package prices and policies are posted on the Klahhane Gymnastics Facebook page. Registration in person with advance payment by cash or check is required.
