AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Port Angeles’ Flodstrom wins more college academic awards

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Ethan Flodstrom of Port Angeles was one of 84 Angelo State student-athletes to be honored with 2024-25 Academic Achievement Awards by the Division II Athletic Directors Association (D2 ADA).

To qualify, student-athletes must post at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA, have completed a minimum of two years of college work, and have been an active member of an intercollegiate athletic team during the previous academic year.

The women’s track and field team led Angelo State with 15 selectees, followed by the baseball team with 14. Flodstrom played baseball both for the Roughriders and at Angelo State. He also played at the University of Texas, Permian Basin.

At Angelo State, Flodstrom also made academic all-district teams and was named to all-region teams for his athletic achievements. He also was an all-Olympic League baseball player for the Roughriders. This past season for the Rams, he hit .376 with seven home runs, 18 doubles, 50 RBIs, 67 runs scored and 11 stolen bases.

Flodstrom majored in management at Angelo State.

Corban ranked No. 1

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Corban University of Salem, Ore., was chosen to take the crown in the 2025 Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s cross country preseason poll, released Friday by the conference office.

Former Roughrider Jack Gladfelter is one of Corban’s top runners. Last year, he was fourth in the CCC 8K championships for Corban and eighth at the NAIA national meet. Gladfelter was third in the state 2A meet while running for Port Angeles in 2022.

Corban earned the top spot with five first-place votes and 128 points. College of Idaho also earned five first-place votes along with 125 points to claim the No. 2 spot. The ’Yotes won the CCC and NAIA title last year.

The 2025 CCC Cross Country Championships are slated for Nov. 7, hosted by Corban in Salem.

WCL MVP

VANCOUVER — It was no surprise that Josh Schleichardt of the Portland Pickles, who had arguably the most dominant season in West Coast League history, was named the league’s most valuable player.

WCL Commissioner Rob Neyer announced Schleichardt was named the league MVP and that Gio de Graauw of the Kelowna Falcons was named the league’s pitcher of the year.

A transfer portal commit to the University of Oregon, Schleichardt set WCL records for home runs (18) and RBI (64). He also led the league with a Portland-record 65 hits and established Pickles records for runs (62), slugging percentage (.650) and OBP (1.115). His 62 runs scored rank second all-time in WCL history.

Splitting time between first base and outfield, Schleichardt batted .325 with 11 doubles, 33 walks and nine stolen bases. The Pickles didn’t play the Lefties this year, so Port Angeles avoided having to face Schleichardt.

De Graauw earned Pitcher of the Year laurels after pacing the WCL with a 0.94 ERA (fourth lowest in WCL history), .143 batting average against (second all-time) and a Kelowna record 0.85 WHIP.

Now in the transfer portal, de Graauw, a native of the Netherlands, tied for the WCL lead with 54 strikeouts and was 3-1 in 48 innings. Two of his victories came against Port Angeles, 14-3 on July 20 and 6-3 on June 17. He allowed one earned run and struck out 14 in 10 innings pitched against the Lefties.

Today, the All-WCL teams will be picked. The Lefties’ Jack Edmunds and Tommy Markey, both of whom had outstanding seasons, have the best shot of making the all-league teams.
