Northern Peninsula Football Club drops game
FEDERAL WAY — Going up against the first-place team in the Western Washington Premier League 2, the Port Townsend-based Northern Peninsula Football Club fell 3-0 to Seattle Umoja FC.
Team manager Joost Besijn said the game was closer than the final score.
“I don’t think the score reflected the game. It seemed more like 1-0 or a draw,” he said. “We could’ve beaten them.”
Seattle Umoja is undefeated in the WWPL 2. If NPFC had won, they would have been in first.
As it is, NPFC remains in second place in the league with a 3-1-2 record.
NPFC plays at Harbor Force 2 in Gig Harbor on Saturday. Besijn said NPFC won the first meeting between the two clubs 9-0.
Besijn is working on scheduling a nonleague friendly match at Memorial Field in Port Townsend for July 10. NPFC’s next league match in Port Townsend is July 18 against Nido Aguila, a team based in the Ballard area of Seattle.
The team has added Eli Gish, a star player for Sequim High School who just finished his high school career this spring.
Sweets pitcher feted
PORTLAND, Ore. — The West Coast League’s Moss Adams Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week are Everett Community College outfielder Noah Williamson of the Yakima Valley Pippins and Pepperdine pitcher Brandon Llewellyn of the Walla Walla Sweets for the week of June 7-13.
The awards were announced Monday by league commissioner Rob Neyer.
Williamson has been a big part of Yakima Valley’s hot start to the season. The Las Vegas native went 11-for-26 with eight runs batted in last week. The Pippins, who have won five straight games, have the WCL’s best record at 7-2.
Llewellyn went seven shutout innings, giving up just one hit in Walla Walla’s victory on Friday over Port Angeles. The Lefties nearly ruined Llewellyn’s gem by scoring six runs in the ninth inning against a relief pitcher, but ended up falling 7-6 to the Sweets.
Llewellyn went 5-1 with a 3.37 ERA in 14 appearances with the Waves this spring.
