AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: East Jefferson Volleyball wins first match of year; Port Hadlock teen wins regional BMX titles

PORT TOWNSEND — The East Jefferson volleyball team went to five sets and 205 points in a marathon 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 17-25, 25-21, 16-14) victory over Seattle Christian.

It was East Jefferson’s first win of the year.

Akira Anderson led the Rivals with five aces and five kills. Jessi Hawley had three aces and three blocks, Alyssa Vandenberg had three aces and three blocks and Ellise Gardner had three aces. Sophie Patterson added two kills and two blocks.

The East Jefferson JV team also beat Seattle Christian 2-1 (9-25, 25-9, 17-15). Coach Emily Zenz said Makayla Vandenberg was the player of the JV match with five aces and two kills.

The Rivals (1-5) next play Monday, hosting Vashon at 6:30 p.m.

Schweitzer wins at state, region BMX

PORT ANGELES — Chase Schweitzer of Port Hadlock, a senior at Chimacum High School, took the No. 1 Gold Cup plate in the 17-20 intermediate class in the Northwest Region Gold Cup BMX finals this past weekend.

The Northwest Region BMX Gold Cup races were held in Richland Saturday and Sunday.

Schweitzer, who makes his home track at the Lincoln Park BMX track in Port Angeles, also took the state No. 1 plate for the 17-20 intermediate class at the Washington State BMX finals held in Spokane on Sept. 18-19.

Peninsula Soccer League results

PORT ANGELES — Pablo Salazar and Edgar Aceves each had hat tricks in wins Sunday in the Peninsula Soccer League.

Aceves scored three goals for Pura Vida in a 5-3 win over Pantry & Latch. Javier Gomez had two goals for Pura Vida and Dallas Taylor, Ben Stanley and Katie Kierczynska all scored goals for Pantry & Latch.

Salazar scored a trio of goals for Salazar Painting in the team’s 5-2 win over High Energy Metals. Raul Medina and Sabrina Wilk also scored goals. Elijah Sanford and Rick Smith scored goals for High Energy Metals.

Juan Gonzalez scored a pair of goals in the Bandidos FC 2-1 win over Strait Slice. Jay Marazon scored Strait Slice’s goal.

Ben Schneider scored two goals in Windermere’s 2-1 win over Forks FC. Oscar Gonzalez scored Forks’ lone goal.

Salazar Painting is leading the league with nine points (3-0-0). Windermere is in second with seven points (2-0-1), and Forks FC and High Energy Metals are tied for third with six points each (2-1-0).

Drive for Cure results

SEQUIM — The team of Frank Herodes, Mary Kubas-Meyer, Mike Bresnahan and Dianne Bresnahan took first place in the 2021 Drive for a Cure net this weekend at Sunland Golf Course.

The team tied with Wes Stoecker, Martin O’Brien, Don Claussen and Geri King, but won the tiebreaker. Both teams shot a 48 net.

Taking third was a team of Irene Schmidt, Kim Mishko, Judy Reno and Bev Handshumaker. This team won a tiebreaker with Carol Deckman, Jim Deckman, Lynn Bubenas and Tony Bubenas with both teams scoring 49.

The team of Jay Tomlin, Mike Mullikin, Dennis Cook, Cheryl Coulter scored a 53, while a team of Alice Myers, Cecil Black, Nan Godfrey and Arlene Dowski scored a 59.

Shooting nine holes, a team of Kathy Tiedeman, Kathy Virgil and Jim Coulter scored a 25.
