Kristen Bell Says This “Sleep Dupe” Is So Effective She Can Skip Morning Skin Care

As anyone with kids, a job, any responsibilities, or hell, even a Netflix account understands, exiting the house looking well-rested in the morning can be near impossible. And that’s something that our beloved Kristen Bell totally gets.

Of course we all make sleep a top priority wherever we can, but sometimes getting good (or enough) sleep is simply not possible, as Kristen herself has discovered. “Some weeks I’m getting a wonderful amount of sleep, a heavy eight or nine hours,” Kristen shared in a conversation with ELLE. “Other weeks, less than six. It all depends on the schedule of my work and my family.” Yep, we get that!

When she’s on set in project mode (like she is right now, shooting the second season of Nobody Wants This, everyone’s favourite recent rom-com release), it’s definitely harder to get that shut-eye in. “This [time on set] is when I will depend most on my sleep dupe, because during shooting, sometimes you don’t get a lot of sleep”, she explained.

Um, yes, she did just refer to a ‘sleep dupe’. And yes, she luckily also revealed its identity…

Kristen Bell’s evening skin care routine

“Advanced Night Repair serum will be at the ready on my nightstand every night”, Kristen shared of the backbone of her bedtime beauty routine.

“I started using the Advanced Night Repair Serum ($199 at Adore Beauty or David Jones) and Cream ($238 at Adore Beauty or David Jones) four and a half months ago, and I have found that it can be my one-stop shop. I don’t know why that surprises me, because Estée Lauder is a very iconic brand and at the forefront of nighttime skin care research and innovation. It’s so dependable, particularly during the weeks where I’m not sleeping. I pop on my repair serum, and it’s the biggest beauty-sleep dupe I’ve ever found. That’s pretty much the only thing I’m using these days.”

Kristen’s advice for locking in a solid pre-sleep skin care routine is simple: “Find something that works—but also works for your schedule”, she recommended. “I can’t have more than one or two [skin care] steps at night. I’m raising two girls who are ten and 11. There’s a lot happening in the evening now. Their skin care [routines are] starting off, or we stay up too late [because] someone has a test in the morning. I need to make my skin care routine very simple, because there are a lot of other things that my family requires to wind down.”

As we always say with evening skin care routines, the easier the better! We don’t want to spend so much time slathering that we run out of time for sleeping.

Kristen Bell morning routine

As for whether she has a morning skin care routine, Kristen says “not really”. At least she’s honest! And if being able to go without products in the A.M. isn’t an endorsement for the prep you did in the P.M., we don’t know what is.

“My morning skin care routine is sometimes not even brushing my teeth, because of the frantic nature of my girls needing to get to school”, Kristen noted. “But the one thing I do: I try to chug a bottle of water the second I wake up, just to reset my body hydration-wise.”

Kristen Bell everyday makeup

She doesn’t find she needs much on her face either, with the visible ‘beauty sleep’ she’s applied the night before. “I wear very little makeup, but I do fill in my eyebrows”, she noted. “I have really light eyebrows, and oftentimes that’s the only thing I’ll do during the whole week if I’m not on camera. The second I fill in my eyebrows with that pencil, I go, “There she is. She’s back.””

“I have found, as I’ve grown older, I do less and wear less makeup in general”, she admitted. “I used to get a much brighter blonde, but over the last three or four years, I’ve gone sort of [back] to my natural colour. But don’t take my eyebrow pencil.”

That’s your warning, people – keep your mitts off Kristen Bell’s brow pencil. And get your mitts onto her ‘sleep dupe’ skin care faves pronto…
