Sens. Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray and Norm Dicks, the North Olympic Peninsula’s congressman, plan to announce their position on the proposed closure of the U.S. Coast Guard base at LaPush in the near future.
“There’s a lot of sense to the current facility that’s there, but I will have to hear more about the plan to know why we should consider their proposal,” Cantwell said Saturday during a visit to Port Angeles for a meeting on rural health care.
Meanwhile, the Quileute tribe is calling for an independent study of the need for the base.
Cantwell, Murray and Dicks, all Democrats, previously indicated they would develop a position on the closure proposal after the Coast Guard completed a series of public hearings on the issue.
Those sessions, held from Forks to Port Townsend, ended Thursday.
