Weddings can cost thousands, but it’s all in what you want

SEQUIM — Gowns, cakes, photographers, lingerie. The only thing not for sale at Saturday’s Peninsula Daily News 2006 Bridal Show indoors at Carrie Blake Park was love. But the soon-to-be brides had that part covered.

Tammy Robinson, 34, of Port Angeles was on the hunt for a photographer for her Aug. 11 big day.

Although Robinson has actually been legally married for about a year to her beau of seven years, and the father of her two little girls, she said the wedding slated for John Wayne Marina this summer is about bringing together family and friends and doing it right.

But you don’t have to spend big bucks to have a beautiful wedding, she said.

In all, Robinson said she plans to spend about $5,000.

‘Average’ wedding cost

Weddings are big business.

In Clallam County, which will host an estimated 440 weddings in 2006, the estimated cost of the “average” wedding will be $23,700, according to The Wedding Report, an industry Web site.

About 280 weddings will be held in Jefferson County in 2006, with an estimated cost of about $25,300 each, according to The Wedding Report data.

Across Washington there will be more than 37,500 weddings, each costing almost $28,000.

The national average for an “average” wedding is more than $26,000, The Wedding Report says. About 66 percent of weddings fall in this category.

A “basic” wedding, which is a step up from spending little or nothing, averages about $7,000, according to the Web site.

Robinson said spending $26,000, or close to that on a wedding, is “outrageous.”

“Simple is more,” she said.
