Warming shelters open as cold snap in forecast

Clallam, Jefferson county agencies have set hours

PORT ANGELES — Some organizations in Clallam and Jefferson counties will open their doors to serve as warming shelters as the temperature hits the freezing mark and is forecast to stay there this week.

Clallam County

Serenity House’s doors will be open 24/7 for warming when temperatures drop below 32 degrees for more than eight hours.

If the facility reaches maximum capacity, Serenity House will help shuttle individuals to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sequim for warming.

Serenity House is located at 2321 W. 18th St. in Port Angeles. It can be reached at 360-452-7221.

Olympic Community Action Programs (OlyCAP) is running a warming shelter St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. The doors are open from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. when temperatures are predicted to be at 36 degrees or below, as long as there are staff available to run it, shelter manager Terry Strickland said.

It is located at 525 N. Fifth Ave. in Sequim and can be reached at 360-683-4862.

The Forks Transit Center is open as a warming center 24/7 when temperatures are below freezing, Forks city planner Rod Fleck said.

The center is located at 551 S. Forks Ave. To get in touch with the Clallam Transit Center, call 360-452-4511.

Jefferson County

The Quilcene Community Center is open as a warming center during its typical hours from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. However, if people need to stay a little past closing, center manager Richard Fitzgerald said he would work to accommodate them.

The center is located at 294952 U.S. Highway 101 in Quilcene. Fitzgerald can be reached at 360-765-3321.

The Brinnon Community Center is serving as a warming center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week, visitor center manager Melissa Sherry said. If someone needs to stay a little later, the center will work to accommodate them, she added.

The center is located at 306144 U.S. Highway 101 in Brinnon. It can be reached at (360) 796-4350.

The Tri-Area Community Center was not open as a community center as of Monday afternoon. However, center manager Jim Goettler said it would be open if he receives a phone call from the Jefferson County Department of Emergency Managment or OlyCAP.

The center is located at 10 W. Valley Road in Chimacum. Goettler can be reached at 360-390-4014.
