UPS cites bad weather for late deliveries

PORT ANGELES —After several days of being closed and out of service, the Port Angeles UPS Customer Center was open on Wednesday and making at least some deliveries with some people coming to the distribution center to pick up their undelivered parcels.

The UPS corporate office cited weather as the primary issue in the delays.

“Our operations are running according to plan and are adequately staffed. As the snow and icy conditions improve, UPS will resume service to areas impacted by weather,” said Amanda Catala with UPS Network Communications on Wednesday.

An area resident said in an email to the Peninsula Daily News that a closed sign was on the door of the UPS Customer Center at 3216 E. Highway 101 in Port Angeles as late as Monday.

She said she had been attempting to retrieve a package from the center since Jan. 6 but was not able to do so until Tuesday of this week.

Employees working at the center Wednesday declined to comment.

Catala said that the UPS franchise has been managing COVID-19 exposures, which have limited its staff, but would not comment on the level at which the Port Angeles location has been impacted.

She placed the blame on delays in deliveries squarely on bad weather.

“Like many local employers, we’ve managed through potential COVID exposures,” she said.

“Safety continues to be our No. 1 priority, and we urge all of our employees to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

“In regards to a decline in delivery services, currently, winter weather is impacting rural areas of the Olympic Peninsula Region of Washington State,” she continued.

“UPS is continuing to service customers in areas where we can safely do so. We will resume service to affected areas as soon as conditions permit.”

The local center has no direct telephone listed and a call to the national office on Monday was answered by a recording that would not respond to a request to speak to a person.
