Undersheriff Sill says he was father coming to aid of injured son

SEQUIM — Clallam County Undersheriff Rich Sill vigorously denied that by taking his adult son to the hospital after a motorcycle crash, he was attempting to cover up a wreck.

“I don’t do anything that’s secret — it’s all in the open,” he said Saturday.

He called those suggestions “totally and completely wrong.”

But Sill’s actions — that he removed his son, a crash victim with a suspended driver’s license, before law-enforcement officers and paramedics could arrive — are under investigation.

Sill gave the Peninsula Daily News his account of what happened last Monday:

Just before 6 p.m., Sill was returning to his Sequim Bay-area home from work when he came upon a bloodied man pushing a motorcycle down West Sequim Bay Road, he said.

He turned on the emergency lights of his sheriff’s car and investigated.

It was his son, Jedediah Sill, 21, who was injured.

Rendering first aid

Sill’s instinct was to check his son for shock, and then transport him to the hospital, the undersheriff said.

“The first thing I had to do was get him taken care of,” Sill said.

Because of the narrow roadway, Sill said, the motorcycle had to be moved off the road so it didn’t block any cars.

“The reality is, a dad found his son pushing motorcycle down the middle of the road and took him to the hospital,” Sill said
