CLALLAM BAY — Clallam Bay’s main grocery store on state Highway 112 might be closing its doors.
With more than $24,000 owed in unpaid taxes, the owners of the six-aisle Clallam Bay Grocery are contemplating shutting down the business.
“We’ve been fighting to keep afloat, and we — we’re just going down,” said Janet Gamet, co-owner of the store.
She and her former husband, Vance Gamet, bought the store in 1994.
Janet said business started slowing down after the Bank of America branch — the only bank in Clallam Bay — closed on Jan. 30, 2005.
Most of Clallam Bay Grocery’s regular customers started shopping out of town where their new banks were located, she said.
“This year has just been extremely hard,” Janet said.
“My hope is just kind of fading away.”
The Gamets were issued a warrant last month by the state Department of Revenue for taxes owed from Jan. 1 to Oct. 31, 2005.
