Sympathy cards can be signed for Port Angeles woman whose son died in Afghanistan

PORT ANGELES — Sympathy cards for a Port Angeles woman whose only son was killed while serving as a Green Beret in Afghanistan can be signed at Port Book and News this weekend.

The cards are available at the book store at 104 E. First St., in downtown Port Angeles.

They will be given on Monday to Betsy Reed Schultz of Port Angeles, whose son, Capt. Joseph William Schultz, died at the age of 36 last Sunday, according to Greg Voyles, president of the board of the Port Angeles Downtown Association, which made the cards available.

Capt. Schultz and two others assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group out of Fort Bragg, N.C. were killed when an improvised explosive device hit his Humvee in Wardak province in Afghanistan.

The cards can be signed by anyone who wants to express sympathy.

Capt. Schultz never lived in Port Angeles but often visited his mother. Reed Schultz is the former owner of The Tudor Inn and a former Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce president.

She also has worked as an organizer of the Festival of Trees, an annual benefit for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.

Capt. Schultz’s remains were flown Tuesday to Dover Air Force Base, Del.

Reed Schultz and her brother, Port Angeles art gallery owner Bob Stokes, returned late Thursday night from there, said Simone Nichols, the owner of Groveland Cottage Bed and Breakfast and a friend of Reed Schultz.

A memorial service for Capt. Schultz, who was never married and had no children, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at Olympic Cellars Winery, 255410 U.S. Highway 101. The service will be open to the public.

Those who want to donate to help Reed Schultz with expenses can do so at the book store or at the KeyBank branch in Port Angeles, where an account has been set up in her name, Nichols said.

Port Book and News is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
