PORT TOWNSEND — The two Jefferson County Superior Court clerk candidates agreed on a need for a Web-based court file system during a Kiwanis Club forum Wednesday at the Elks Lodge in Port Townsend.
Acting Jefferson County Superior Court Clerk Ruth Gordon debated her opponent Tammi Rubert in front of about 100 Kiwanis members and guests.
“This is a really momentous occasion because it is the first time the clerk’s race has been contested in more than 30 years,” said Gordon.
“It’s a very good thing for Tammi and I, running for this position, so we can raise important issues.”
Rubert and Gordon are both Democrats. The top vote-getter in the Sept. 20 primary will advance to the Nov. 8 general election, where there is no Republican challenger.
“I am very proud to be running for the position,” Rubert said.
Internet-based system
Both candidates promised to create an Internet-based court file system that would be accessible to county residents around the clock.
“I have the experience to do that,” said Gordon.
“In a while I’ll make sure that every court that has the money will have their documents online.”
Rubert also endorsed a Web-based system idea.
“Putting the documents online … it’s the way of the future,” she said.
