PORT ANGELES — The city of Port Angeles will begin work on its 16th Street stormwater retrofit project at the intersection of 16th and C streets today.
The project will retrofit stormwater filtration systems to improve water quality in Tumwater Creek and Port Angeles Harbor.
Drivers can expect the intersection of 16th and C streets to be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays, according to a news release.
The sidewalk also will be closed although entrances to businesses will remain open.
Marked detour routes will be in place for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
During the project, work crews will install a hydrodynamic separator and three biofilters, one each at the intersections of C, D and E streets with 16th Street.
The stormwater upgrades will help remove suspended solids, dissolved copper, dissolved zinc, total phosphorus and other pollutants from stormwater runoff before draining into Tumwater Creek.
Crews will begin by removing existing asphalt and concrete to prepare for the installation of the biopod stormwater bio-filtration systems. The excavation work will include the use of a crane in the right-of-way.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-December, according to the news release.
