State to add more speed zones to Highway 101 near Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — The state Department of Transportation is adding more speed limits to U.S. Highway 101.

Permanent speed limit changes to the east and west of Port Angeles are planned this week, Transportation said in a press release.

Crews will install 50 mph speed limit signs between existing 55 mph and 45 mph speed limit signs between mileposts 266 and 270 east of Port Angeles, near Sequim, and mileposts 242 and 245 west of Port Angeles.

The changes are “to allow for a more gradual transition,” according to the release.

Signs will be installed sometime this week, Transportation said.

The lowered speed limits will be enforceable as soon as new signs are posted.

The changes were made following state engineering studies, Transportation said.

“Members of the community requested we check into this,” said Shari King, Transportation spokeswoman.

She added that requests came from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, from trucking companies and from a winery.

The final decision was made by John Nisbet, state traffic engineer, King said.

There is no appeal process for the new speed zones, King said.
