PORT ANGELES — Yolanda Chinn scored the deciding goal in the shootout as Sequim High School shaded rival Port Townsend 2-1 in an Olympic League do-or-die playoff game Wednesday at Civic Field.
The North Olympic teams, which split two games in the regular season, took this one right down to Sequim’s fourth shot in the shootout.
“There’s no better way to end our third game of the year against Port Townsend,” Sequim coach Nathan Davis said.
“It’s fitting to our rivalry.”
Sequim won the first game between the two 3-1 at home early in the season, and then Port Townsend returned the favor by winning 4-2 on its home field in the second half of the year.
Neither team wanted to lose Wednesday’s playoff game.
It was knotted 0-0 at halftime before Sequim went ahead 1-0 early in the second half on a goal by Brittany Gates on an assist by freshman Kyla Hall.
Hall, who played junior varsity all year, was sent in the game after a starter was injured.
“I could see in Kyla’s eyes on the sideline that she was confident and ready to go in,” Davis said.
Hall sailed an assist to Gates from deep in the backfield.
Port Townsend had its own freshman sensation on its field.
Frosh forward Brynne Gambill scored the equalizer for the Redskins later in the second half to knot the score at 1-1.
The score stayed that way through regulation and 10 minutes of overtime.
Sequim put a lot of pressure on the Redskins’ goal in overtime but Port Townsend sophomore defender Margarete Moore played outstanding defense, helping keep the Wolves out of the net.
The Wolves’ defense, meanwhile, clamped down hard on the Redskins.
“Sammy Pinnel and Yolanda Chinn are the heart of our defense,” Davis said. “They work very well together.”
