PORT ANGELES — Soroptimist International of Port Angeles – Noon Club has donated $70,000 to the Field Arts & Events Hall, saying the Port Angeles Waterfront Center it is a part of will benefit the Valley Estuary Project.
The donation secures naming rights for the women’s restroom at the facility now under construction on Front and Oak streets.
“The Soroptimist International club of Port Angeles’ gift truly exhibits that they live by the sentiment that ‘leadership is an art,’” said Jessica Hernandez, development director for the waterfront center.
“Our board and staff are humbled by the club’s philanthropy and we’re excited to have them on board as integral partners in this exciting community asset. Thank you so much for joining in this important effort.”
Said Lena Washke, Soroptimist president, in a press release: “Soroptimist members are thrilled at the opportunity to support the Field Arts & Events Hall Project and look forward to watching the development of this project and the long-term benefit to our community.
“This donation is possible due to the efforts of our many club members and community members that supported the Valley Creek Estuary Project.”
The six-year Valley Creek Estuary Project was dedicated in 2003. It was a partnership between the City of Port Angeles, the Port of Port Angeles, KPly, Inc. and Soroptimist International of Port Angeles.
Soroptimist International made a five-year, $50,000 commitment to the Port of Port Angeles in 1996, the release said.
“In addition to this $50,000 commitment, Soroptimist members promoted the project, coordinated several fundraisers, participated in presentations about the project, garnered community support and pursued grant opportunities,” the release said.
“Soroptimist International of Port Angeles was instrumental in the success of this $1.2 million dollar project.”
The group had funds remaining from this effort that were specifically for the benefit of the Valley Creek Estuary.
“At that time, one of the ideas was to hold these funds to support a public restroom at the estuary site,” the release said.
“The remaining funds must be used in connection with this project”.
The Port Angeles Waterfront Center, the home of the Field Arts & Events Hall, is adjacent to the estuary.
“Together with the Marine Science Center and the Cultural Center, it will bring people to the area and also to the estuary, the release said.
“This project will enhance the estuary and the surrounding areas.”
