Sekiu man found dead in vehicle in river

SEKIU — A 33-year-old Sekiu man has been found dead in a vehicle in the Sekiu River.

The body of Steven M. Boynton was found Friday afternoon in a vehicle that had gone off the Sekiu River Road, a logging road. He was identified on Saturday, said Sgt. Ed Anderson of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.

A person driving along the roadway earlier Friday discovered the wreck and called 9-1-1 dispatchers, saying a person appeared to be trapped underneath a vehicle that was upside-down in the Sekiu River about 6.5 miles up the road, which is accessed from milepost 10 on state Highway 112.

The Sheriff’s Office said it investigated a report of the wreck at about 12:47 p.m. Friday and found one body in the vehicle.

Deputies said it had gone off the road while the driver attempted to travel over a bridge.

The vehicle rolled over as it left the roadway and crashed into the Sekiu River.

Deputies said Saturday that Boynton worked for the Dahlgren Logging Company based in Forks.

Boynton had been working at a Dahlgren logging site, which is accessed from the Sekiu River Road, on Thursday. He left the job site that evening but never returned home.

Law enforcement had not been notified Boynton was overdue and had not returned home that evening.

Although the cause of the crash has not yet been determined, it is believed that speed may have been a contributing factor to the cause of the crash, according to Anderson.

First responders from the Clallam County Fire Department and Neah Bay Ambulance crews assisted with the removal of the deceased man from the wreckage.
